Natalie
It is not that often that I shoot someone I’ve never met before but that is what happened here with Natalie Chinnyah. She is a dancer and a friend of a friend who is a photographer who was working with her recently. I was at his house (by invitation) while he was shooting.
I found Natalie quite fascinating as a model and very interesting as a person. She is a dancer and actress and is busy with work which doesn’t surprise me in the least. She has the ability to assume a character and move and act as that character with the ease of experience. It’s great to watch and great to work with.
My friend Paul took a break for about 10 minutes and I got these. They are a taste of things to come as Natalie and I are now planning a shoot together in the next few weeks.
What’s the Story?
Several months ago Dave Press and I met up for an ideas session on promo images. We had coffee and talked and I came up with an idea he wasn’t sure of at the time. Nevertheless I did shoot several images for this idea. When it came to processing I didn’t think I had all the parts I needed and so didn’t even begin to put them together. The missing ingredient was a jukebox and I hadn’t got one. Time was limited and finding the right jukebox wasn’t a priority. Other images were made. They were used and the original idea was forgotten.
Until a few hours ago. Then I was looking over some images for another purpose entirely and I came across the girl. I loved the shape. I guess I’m funny that way. And so I played around with it and then remembered what it had been shot for. Just for the hell of it I decided to go ahead with a different composition and see how it would turn out without the jukebox. I think it turned out okay. The jukebox was more of a prop rather than a character in the original idea. It was to be there to provide the “motivation” for the girl.
But the main point of the image was layers of interest and depth. I wanted to see if I could have an obviously sexy woman in a major part of the frame and for her to somehow not be the centre of interest.
You be the judge. What is the story here? If you had to write a caption about it what would it be?
Chris Carter
Chris is about to launch a website for his new book which is a detective story set in New York in the sixties. Chris is one of the most knowledgable people on the planet on the subject of The Velvet Underground and a fairly reliable source (Chris himself) told me the book has some aspects of that scene woven into it.
This session took place at Chris’s compound in deepest Finchley, London.
Live Band Work
There is some aspect of any kind of work that has the potential to be fun to do. At least that’s my theory. In photography there are all kinds of work I don’t particularly like. Event photography is one of them. Weddings come into that category and so does shooting live bands. But ….
I’m finding that aspect that I like. And without going into it in any detail I’ll just put up a few samples from the “Smoke on the Water” live outdoor concert that took place on Saturday as part of the Saint Hill Arts Festival.
This is 2190.

Drummer: Roger Nunn
As mentioned a week or two ago Roger Nunn wanted some promo type images. I’d been looking forward to this session for a while and had dreamed up a few scenes. On the day the weather wasn’t kind and it was also quite late in the day when we began.
We started on a roof in the heart of the City of London.
Looking south towards the Thames.
Looking north. Yes that is St Paul’s Cathedral.
Looking west toward Blackfriars. It was quite tricky getting Roger on to that platform. I told him I was insured but he still took a little persuading.
Roger is basically a nice guy but looking like one isn’t always called for. So we went for a sinister kind of thing here.
And lastly the sulking in an alley type look which is compulsory for all rock musicians. In this case Roger wanted coffee and there was none to be had.
Showing “No Mercy”
Friend and Press Gang drummer Roger Nunn came over today to pick up some prints and to show me the cover of the Press Gang’s new album which now has the title “No Mercy”.
The first hundred sold will be a special limited and numbered edition which is a lot larger than the normal CD album. It looks great and I’m very pleased with the way it’s been printed. After the first hundred it will only be available as a regular sized CD cover.
Front cover
The inside spread shows individual shots of the band. The background image came from a library but was processed by yours truly.
Back cover.
You’ll notice Roger’s hands are filthy in these pictures. He’d been painting today. I could have asked him to clean up first but would that truly be rock and roll?
Back to Rock and Roll
Recent posts have drifted away from Rock and Roll so this is to get the blog back on track. Louise was fun to work with. This was shot on the roof of her flat somewhere near Holloway in London one evening about a year ago I think.
I’m about to move and I’m not entirely sure where I’m going yet but will likely arrive there within the next day or two. I’m aiming to do a lot more work along these lines in the near future. So if you’re any kind of artist reading this and you like what you see let me know.
More On The Press Gang
This project began months ago. It involved three seperate shoots and a lot of post work.
I’ve known Dave Press for more than a decade and always respected his musical ability. So when he asked if I would shoot some work for publicity posters and an album cover I was delighted. We discussed a lot of ideas but in the end went with something completely different to our initial thoughts. These are some of the results.
This was shot as a poster with space for tour details etc.
This one is the intended album cover. Shot in a pub car park in Merton (The Prince of Wales). The pink Cadillac was possibly the most beautiful vehicle I have yet seen.
Some individual shots of the band members starting with Dave.

This is Jim the bass player.
And Roger the drummer.
I like working with musicians. Let’s have some more.
A Couple of Charlies
I’ve been working on a redesign for a London wedding photographer and friend’s website.
Work is still in progress on the site but I couldn’t resist putting something up. And if you’re in the market for a wedding photographer go check him out. He’ll put a smile on your face and get some great pictures.
An Experimental New Product
This one features some pictures from a shoot with musician and composer Ludwig Amadeus. Unfortunately I couldn’t get hold of him before putting this up so the music isn’t his. It’s mine. But I’m sure he’ll come through with something of his own soon. [Edit: He did.]
I’d love to know what you think. You can even leave a comment here if you want.
Ludwig Amadeus
A.K.A. Ludwig Amadeus.
Is a very good London based musician
who I spent a few hours with recently shooting.
We had intended to get some shots up on a roof in Central London but the rain that day put paid to that idea. These were shot in a pretty cramped flat in Shepherds Bush but we had more control over the weather there.
Might As Well Face It
Had a fun session with Louise Taylor on her roof last night. Here are some of the results.
When she started getting cold we went inside.
Not because she was cold but because it is a lot of work to retouch goosebumps.
She did her own makeup and wardrobe too.
What’s happened to the 365? Not sure yet. It is currently suspended while I catch up on some more urgent work. But I also have to figure out if it belongs on this site.
Fantasy Session
Well I needed to get the processing finished on Barbara’s session and I had a bunch of other non photographic stuff to get out of the way. All of which left me without having made a 365 pic for today. I could still do one but it is now 2:00am and I don’t have anyone else around. I will continue tomorrow.
So these are all from the session last Wednesday.
I have this affect on women.
I like the movie scene quality of this one.
She can be ice cold and totally hot at the same time.
Love the colours of this one
I can just imagine her walking into Raymond Chandler’s imagination.
Loveable or what?
And then came Joey…
… and then came …
and that was that.
63/365 Barbara
This is Barbara who acts, sings and models and who lives in West Sussex. Today we worked together for about 8 hours and made several like this and others with a little film noir flavour. I love the pinup pictures of the ’40s and ’50s and so does she so we had a lot of fun dreaming them up and getting them done.
48/365 Dave Press
Dave Press is an amazing guitarist. I am proud to say that this is the first shot of a series I will be making over the coming weeks that will amount to the first of my unusual local people projects. The idea of the project is to create a feature type profile of local people that interest me.
This picture wasn’t shot in the store room of the local guitar shop but in Dave’s living room. He has quite a collection that aren’t all shown here. But more interesting than his collection is his playing. He is a virtuoso in many genres of music. Go check out his website or better still catch him live.
